My private teaching began in the summer of 2007. I started with two students and have continued to teach every summer since. Once I graduated from Cal State San Bernardino in June of 2014, I have taught year-round. Most of my students are beginners, and it can be rewarding when I see how much they have improved over the months. Perhaps we could make up a new song with the note names. Or for example an older adult who is having memory problems for learning a new piece, but is very good at associating the sound of music with a feeling or image. Perhaps we could take the music in smaller chunks with an image association for each new musical chunk. I am a performer, composer, and educator who loves inspiring and cultivating a passion for music in my students. I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance from Cal State Fullerton in 2017, and moved out to CT to pursue my Master's degree at the Hartt School and study with Carrie Koffman. Few students learn quick on the parts of the violin and the bow.I used the violin books on All for Strings by Robert Frost and Kjos music company from San Diego. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Jazz music is my favorite to play because it stimulates the brain in many different ways. I was introduced to it at a young age and immediately took interest in how all the notes were being played. When I found out that they weren't looking at music when playing, I thought it was the best thing I'd ever learned! The art of improvisation is very complex and it's an ever-growing form of music. The interaction between all the members playing in a jazz setting is one of the coolest things to witness once the genre is explored in the slightest.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
When I began saxophone, I knew I wanted to eventually play all the different types and with the help of my school's music program, I was able to before going to college. I started with the alto saxophone which is of course, the most popular amongst students. Then I went on to play the Baritone sax in marching band and tenor and soprano after that. While in University, we were challenged with the task of mastering other woodwind instruments that helped expand our canvas of sound. I've also experimented with drum technique and basic piano.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Music doesn't run in my immediate family. It does, however, have influence over a small group of cousins. The same cousin that inspired me to pick up the sax also sings and plays guitar. I learned a lot from him by learning from ear and not being intimidated by playing in front of others. I use to watch him perform with rock and funk bands. His dad is also the lead singer in his own band. They play often at different venues around the city I grew up in. Their family is a large part of my musical journey.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in music once I learned it was possible through the knowledge of a professor from Western Michigan University. He and a group of nine played a brief show to demonstrate their skills and talk to us about the different degrees offered at WMU. We bought their CDs from them and got to talk to them directly after the show. I had such a revelation that day because I never knew that people could go to school for something like that, let alone make an entire career from it.
