My teaching experience back in the day was when I started working as a music teaching assistant more than 20 years ago. I will pay attention to the kids who were not be in learning music. That's what I thought, and I know I'll have to slow down and find the way that influencing their study or if they just want to be more active instead of sitting around. Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
In elementary school we had music class once a week for an hour. We worked on a school program that we put on at the end of the year. One year we put on our program, but one child was front and center. None of us really knew him. He played the glockenspiel and xylophone. All of us kids onstage were amazed by him. At the end of the show most of the parents were clapping for him, including most of us kids onstage. The music teacher came onstage and gave him a big hug with pride. I asked the music teacher later how I could be like that kid. It was then that the music teacher told me that the boy took individual lessons from him.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
All weak points need to be addressed, as well as practicing in different environments. Beginning your day constantly with the same daily exercises can be good, but it also may leave you completely dependent on those exercises before you perform. Life isn't always so accommodating. Switching things up, daily or almost daily, will create a more solid embouchure and a greater ability to succeed in your performances. I have collected exercises over the years that will conquer boredom, which could lead to improper use of a daily exercise and hinder your performance in the long run.
When will I start to see results?
Children will see results immediately and will be excited about picking up the instrument the next day. The next day's results will make them understand that they can actually get better every single day. This is mandatory to keep a child's interest, and it's an absolute necessity for them to keep going in the long run. One of my trombone professors explained progress to me as not really walking up a ramp to get to a higher performance ability. It's more like walking up the rungs of a screw. You may slide down a rung every so often, but no matter what you're always on your way up.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Every child is ready to start lessons at any time, even if they've never even created a noise on the instrument. Having a professional show your child the ropes from the very beginning gives them a tremendous head start. Children can become immediately turned off at the beginning of learning an instrument if they see it as hard or too much effort. Some will even give up immediately. Making progress from the first time they pick up the instrument turns a light on inside of them that may never turn off.
