I teach Early Childhood Educational music classes and Piano through the LAUSD in the Al Hambra school district :)
I live in Atwater Village in Los Angeles with my family and look forward to working with new students. I have been teaching piano for 10+ years. I also teach music in after school programs in La Hambra and Downey districts through LAUSD. I work with students of all ages. I have a studio in Atwater Village or I travel to various neighborhoods around LA to teach in students' homes. Growing up in Canada, I performed frequently in music festivals and placed provincial piano competitions. I look forward to meeting with you to find ways to enrich your learning experience!
I believe each student is unique and requires lessons tailored to his or her individual strengths. While covering all the bases with each learner, some students thrive in enriching with improvisation. Others prefer to have set exercises to improve technique. Some have specific goals, like learning a particular song or a melody for an upcoming holiday. The great thing about one-on-one instruction is I can customize lessons to suit each learner. I believe piano and keyboarding needs to be fun because if you enjoy doing it you're going to learn!
For my younger learners I use elements of the Orff and Suzuki Technique, balanced with a play-based approach. The main feedback I get from parents is kids forward to my lessons because I do lots of games, use a light approach, and are always very encouraging. The most important aspect is keeping kids motivated. I believe reading music important, but only one part of playing music. We learn to speak before we learn to read, and I believe in encouraging kids to listen, improvise, and explore the keyboard.
I can't describe how rewarding teaching can be. As a parent myself I know how amazing it is to see my kids learning and feeling pride in their achievements. I help my students to set goals that are achievable. I believe a little practice each day is one of the most useful tools to give to a learner. The best way I've found to work with young learners is with play-based approaches. Students often don't know they're learning with one of their favorite BINGO-style musical technique games. As well, students can play right from the first lesson with some of the tricks and techniques I've developed over my years teaching.
