I enjoy watching students progress and improve. It brings joy to them and myself. Playing guitar or bass for me is a form of art therapy/meditation. It's a place where one can lose themselves and activate/stimulate the brain unlike any other engagement as the brain is simultaneously multi-tasking when playing an instrument. I've helped clients get past obstacles in their abilities and philosophy about the guitar/bass and music in general. Read More

For beginning students of any age, I focus a lot on technique and building good habits. I will always use Stick Control by G.L. Stone, which has great material for a beginner drummer/percussionist. This is a stage where I will lightly introduce concepts of beat, tempo and rhythm, to help establish a musical vocabulary. Once I've determined that they have a good grasp of time and rhythm, I slowly begin to introduce rudiments and reinforce them lesson by lesson. Read More

With kids, starting off with nursery rhyme melodies is the easiest way to have them recognize melodies they are playing themselves. Read More

I like to cultivate an atmosphere of openness and encouragement, but I do also believe it is important to maintain focus and make sure students are practicing sufficiently. I believe that at least a basic understand of music theory is important for learning any instrument, so from time to time we will discuss theory in relation to the bass. Read More

First of all, theory is extremely important to learn music. By learning and understanding theory you will realize and appreciate music as the amalgam between art and science. Music is heavily influenced by math. Music is science of the soul. Secondly, I make a lot of emphasis on improvisation as well. As soon as you understand the fretboard and your finger get used to playing, then improvisation connects your fingers with your soul, your muse, your inspiration. Read More

So because I had struggled with many of the same things as a large percentage of my students do, I can still truly understand the problem and offer my own insights and solutions to these problems, which other more naturally talented players simply can not do because they never experienced any of those problems themselves firsthand. A third reason is because I have a knack for explaining things, no matter how complex, in very simple terms and break down the seemingly complex stuff into tiny pieces which they can grasp and master.
