My teaching style revolves around the individual student. Every student must practice daily and enjoy practicing, so astudent's success comes from my encouragement and instruction. Each student brings a desire to learn how to play an instrument and my goal is to assist them in understanding and being able to playthat instrument. I also use Ted Reed's book, Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer as a supplement, as well as write additional exercises, rudiments, and warmups in a blank staff paper book that I typically have everyone get.  The drum set method I use greatly depends on the student's ability level. For beginners I use my own method, The Beginner's Handbook for Drum Set. For advanced students i use a variety of books that are more specialized such as Advanced Funk Studies by Rick Latham or The Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley.  For mallets I like the Garwood Whaley books which go from beginning to advanced as well as the Leigh Howard Stevens book Method of Movement for Marimba. The material and methods will be based on a student's skill-level and musical goals and interests. For orchestral band students, this would include basic technique, music reading, and repertoire. For teaching jazz I often use John Riley's "The Art of Bop Drumming" series as a source of practice material. For grasping the feel of various music styles, I will often listen to recordings with a student, and help them figure out what the drummer or percussionist is doing, and how to play it. Read More

My teaching experience encompasses many areas of percussion. I've been teaching private drum lessons throughout my time in college, and also served as Percussion camp counselor at Mansfield. The percussion camp at Mansfield insists vast exposure to all areas of percussion, including drum set, mallet percussion, marching percussion, steel pans, and orchestral percussion, so a wide-spread knowledge of the instruments is essential in being a counselor for the camp.
