For Beginner students I would start with the Frederick Noad Classical Guitar book. This book is a great book to hold interest in the Students. This Book teaches Basics, but gets right down and dirty in to learning music. The Music in the book starts with simple Melody for the student, with some advanced part underneith to give the allusion to a young beginning student they are achieving greatly. This tactic helps harness the musical drive in a student. Read More

I began teaching guitar in high school to middle school students and continued teaching children and adults throughout college. While in music college, I grew to start to teaching bass guitar as well as drums. My teaching style is focused yet fun. Me and my students always have a good time through my curriculum of theory and how it relates to music they enjoy. Whether it’s finding music theory in Taylor Swift song, or learning the guitar neck through a Beatles solo, I always find a way to teach through interests that the students have rather than force a cookie cutter approach. For very young guitar students I use Dick Bennett's books 1,2, 3 to start and then as the students progress we will continue to Mel Bay books 1, and 2 then proceed to chord books and charts, some knowledge that i will personally pass on such as finger exercise's and scales, use of the I pad and some guitar apps as well. I will also share my library of songs with them and show them how to play songs they enjoy as requested. Read More

One of the cool things about teaching is that every student is different and learns differently! I am usually able to assess each students level and pace within the first couple lessons. At the end of each lesson I will give them a realistic goal to achieve for the next lesson. Any improvement is improvement and I try and always recognize that. I try to inspire by example as well, showing the student where their practicing and hard work can take them if they keep working at it diligently. Read More

My teaching experience began in 1980 while still in high school teaching private lessons. Since then Ive taught at Westminster Choir College, Rutgers University, NJ State and County Teen Arts Programs as well as private and group lessons in my own studio. My casual approach allows students the relaxation and freedom necessary to learn at their own pace. With a strong focus on fundamentals and using those fundamentals as building blocks, my goal is to help students become musical and creative and find their own unique voice on their instrument. For beginning guitar students who are children and just starting on guitar, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Book 1. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, and as I get to know the student better, I will personalize their lessons, setting goals to learn specific songs or solo pieces that cater to their musical tastes and interests, which keeps them invested in their guitar practice.
