For all students, I eschew learning specific beats of specific songs, and instead teach them to hear/play/read/write beats from generic forms to specific variations. For this, Ive adapted my system of Seven Shapes for rhythmic permutation. For beginner students, we focus on hearing pulse, counting meter, and simple rudiments for basic stick control. I love working with students and try to get them to learn as much as they can about the guitar or bass guitar. I teach all ages from ages 9 through 45 and I love working with them. I have been playing bass guitar for 12 years and guitar for 10 years and I practice everyday. For young beginners, I assess the best approach - be it a particular method book or writing out my own studies geared toward the individual. From the first lesson, proper bow technique is emphasized, helping the student get a pleasing sound in the first lesson. For children I tend to teach songs by The Beatles as standard curriculum, as well as learning to read music proficiently. The things tend to be non-negotiable unless the parent informs me otherwise. For teens and pre-teens reading music is optional as well as the types of songs you wish to learn or the theory you wish to learn. That's just a general overview, along the way we learn all types of riffs, vamps, chords, scales, etc., to which we follow my standard development method, but never neglecting your own personal interests in music.
