Patience. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults nearing their 50's and the one universal approach I take with all of them is taking every day as a step forward. I am never aggressive with my students. I believe in pushing them to the next level but never through negativity. I began teaching informally while I was in high school, giving friends and family tips and impromptu lessons on basic musical concepts. This continued to develop as I went to college, forming long-term teaching relationships with a small studio of friends who were eager to learn. While I was not a Conservatory student, I majored in Psychology through the College party to have enough flexibility to take electives in electronic music, dance classes (for which I also played accompaniment) and eventually work in the student unions Live Sound production crew. My teaching style is fully interactive. As a teacher of both music and computers, I was never a dictatorial teacher. Other teachers, even young ones, that everyone was up and around. Talking to each other. Some listening to music. Whatever style fits the learner. You cannot "cheat" in music performance. Either you can do it or you cannot. My teaching style is based around the phrase of I want to teach you how to fish, not just have you pay for fish. I don't want to be your fishmonger. I want to give you the tools & fulfill my role to prepare you to be the best drummer you can be. My beliefs a student comes with ideas and goals in regards to their respective instrument or task, and a teacher supposed to help them express those ideas or help them accomplish what they want to do yet also refine technique and their approach to the instrument.
