ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BM, University of the Arts, Drums Performance

Awards:

2013- University of the Arts Drumset Award

Overview:

I am a driven musician and open-minded teacher who wants to create a positive musical experience for my students. I graduated the University of the Arts in 2013 with a degree in Jazz Performance for the drums. My talents have taken me all over the country, most recently with my band ILL DOOTS. With them, we have accomplished two East coast tours. My experience also spans around Philadelphia, where I have played with a number of groups and artists. Versatility is something I strive for because there is so much to gain by experiencing all forms of music. In addition to the drumset, I have experience on mallet percussion, orchestral percussion, marching percussion, pit orchestras, and hand drums.

EXPERIENCE

I have 3 years of teaching experience, beginning when I was in college. I highly encourage regular practice because it gets the student comfortable with the fundamentals of their instrument. Eventually, this will allow creative freedom for them as they progress with their studies. I want my students to feel confident about their progress and abilities, so I encourage them to play with other musicians. Being a part of rhythm section can be a fun but pressuring aspect of being in an ensemble. I will express to my students how the drums can be more than just banging on pots and pans; there is unique sound quality to them, and within an ensemble, it can be a great experience.

METHODS USED

With all my students, I will always take interest in what they want to learn. I want to make their experience as fun as mine was when I first began. So knowing my students' musical inclinations is important to my methods, because it gives me a direction in which to apply my instruction. My younger students will start with the basic rhythm rudiments and reading notated percussion music. I am also willing to assist them in any repertoire that students are given in their school's music program. Older or more advanced students will still review the fundamentals, but also get more heavily in-depth with different feels and styles of music.

LESSON STYLE

I have learned that every student cannot be taught the same way, so I tailor my instruction to the individual student. I encourage my students to set personal goals of achievement at their own pace. I want my students to know that our lessons are reciprocal. In my experiences I have come to love that in music, there is always more to learn. There is essentially more music than we would ever listen to in our lifetime. Any musical experience that I have, I always try to walk away knowing a little than I did before. My students should feel comfortable that I am able to learn from them.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
