I began teaching informally while I was in high school, giving friends and family tips and impromptu lessons on basic musical concepts. This continued to develop as I went to college, forming long-term teaching relationships with a small studio of friends who were eager to learn. I also had a small studio in Hudson, NY, while I was living there. Since moving to Philadelphia I've taught around 25 students over the course of the last 10 years. Read More

Every drum student is different so I customize each lesson to fit the particular students needs and goals. I always start out with fundamentals and rudiments on the snare drum, Focusing on stick position posture and proper technique. Once these basics are established we move onto a basic drum set method book covering notation, basic drumbeats and drum fills. From there we branch out into various styles of drumming, very often we move to jazz drumming from there as that is usually the first time students are offered to play drum set in their school music program. During my career at Temple I had the opportunity play with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and at various venues including in New York at Carnegie Hall, as an example. I obtained my NJ Teacher Certification for the grades of K-12 in 2004, from Rowan University. Read More

I have been teaching drums for 3 years and have found that teaching book work, but keeping it light and fun is a great way to keep students engaged and motivated. If the student isn't having fun then I am not doing my job. I both play and teach many different styles and can give advice on drum kits and cymbals, sticks, tuning and more. We will go over things like technique, rudiments etc while also learning songs, melody and song structure. Read More

After evaluating a student's understanding and capabilities, I typically choose a method book to parallel their existing skills and work through it at the most enthusiastic, but comfortable pace. The importance of using method books is based in the student's ability to review material between lessons and using them as checklists for progress. Establishment of a solid fundamental approach will be critical to the student's advancement and ability to perform for an audience, regardless of size or venue acoustics. Read More
