It offers simple, effective patterns for developing technique, skill, and vocabulary. It can be used intensively or casually as we borrow concepts and patterns to work with. For beginner students Ill usually start with George Lawrences Stick Control and Ted Reeds Syncopation. Once I know they have a grasp of the fundamentals, Ill usually see what their interests are or what they are working on personally and help them improve and build upon those things. This could be repertoire for school or auditions or simply a song they have been trying to learn for a while. In my 30 years as a drummer/musician, whether authoring, performing, or recording music, Ive consistently pushed myself to explore new styles, techniques, and approach. My first grade-shool hands were with my then-step-brother, moving from simple punk to more melodic surf-frock to lush psychedelic rock. Across increasingly noisy and experimental bands, I quickly learned to serve powerful, solid time. For beginners, I have a special system that implements coordination while utilizing proper counting technique. As their understanding of their limbs grows the more I begin to welcome actual musical notation. This system has proven time and time again to tackle the initial issue that coordination imposes. In intermediate to advanced students I stress the importance of technique, quality of sound, coordination, visualization, and relaxation/movement.
