Im Patrick R.; musician, teacher, and tinker-er. Music has been both my catalyst for cultural communication and my foil for scientific toil. Born and raised in Tulsa, I was first surrounded by the country/rock of orthodox white suburbia. The only music in the haven of All Souls Unitarian was still all organ and choir. Utterly bored by studio piano lessons, I started taking drums at a local music store at the end of 5th grade, right when my world opened up. Read More

I am a very passionate and enthusiastic teacher with a lot of patience. Every student is different and learns at their own pace. I began giving private guitar instruction towards the end of my college studies, and after graduation taught group and private lessons at a music school. At that school I taught a vast range of ages, skill levels, and instruments, from 4 year old beginners, to teenage experts, to adults who needed a brush-up. I learned the wondrous potential of motivated students with supportive parents as well as the futility of forcing an instrument or a style on a student that actually wanted to explore something else. In addition to drum set, I also teach djembe (West African), bodhran (Celtic), doumbek (Middle Eastern) and conga (Afro-Cuban). My favorite thing about teaching is watching students develop into creative musicians and finding their own voice. My playing and teaching has always been based in tradition, but not bound by it. I have found that keeping a relaxed, fun atmosphere during lessons allows students to learn at their own pace. Read More
