I try to approach each student as an individual. Every student has their own level of enthusiasm, patience, willingness, and availability. Learning music should always be fun and rewarding first and foremost. I believe in building a good teacher/student relationship and pushing my students beyond what they believe their limits are. I tend to stress fundamentals when it comes to what my philosophy of teaching is. I argue that the more time is spent on fundamentals, the better technique the student will have later on. The challenge comes into play with the fact the fundamentals can get tedious and boring! I have been teaching voice for almost 20 years now. I have found that it doesn't matter the age if you have a love of singing then you can learn. I have had many students and it's so much fun to watch them learn and grow and find out that everyone has a voice and is capable of singing. Each student is a bit different and part of the fun is learning how to help them move forward whether through vocal exercises, ear training, learning how to breathe or just giving them the confidence they need to sing out loud. I began teaching oboe and piano lessons when I was in college at Ball State University, about 8 years ago, and have added the other instruments over the course of the last 5 years. I struggled with intense performance anxiety, and found that singing at open mics relieved some of the stress I felt when I played the oboe. I encourage singing everything through before even touching the instrument, and ask all of my students to get comfortable with singing in lessons, because it's going to happen! Read More

I began leading praise and worship at my church when I was only 8 years old! I studied music theory at SUNY Orange in Middletown, NY.
