For young piano students I'm a fan of John Thompson method books. I get the student through beginners and then through at least the Grade 1 book. Then I introduce beginner piano literature books to help the student see a real music book. I work on music theory and how to map out a piece of music to learn it better. During my 27-year tenure as Assistant Chair of the Voice Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, I instituted courses for teaching singers all styles of jazz and contemporary music. For beginner piano students I generally work out the Faber Piano Adventures and for adults I use The Older Beginner Piano Course by Bastien. For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books. I am a singer/songwriter/keyboardist. I graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Salem State University, where I studied voice piano. I have a background in musical theater and have been performing in shows for about ten years. I sing in the band and the choir weekly at Second Congregational Church in Peabody. I began teaching voice in 1998 and have had a few students ever since. I had a previous career in furniture conservation and taught classes in that field too. I teach in my home studio, or I go to students' homes, which ever works best. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 85. I find they make the best progress if they can make some time to practice regularly: I endeavor to ensure that the student has repertoire that they find interesting and fun, and that will stretch them. I am both goal-oriented and open-ended with my students. At the beginning of lessons, I always check in with them to see how their progress was for the week and any questions or concerns that arose in their practice. I find this puts the ownership on them to reflect on their week of music making (and help them to remember that practice happens more than just in the lesson!).
