While I was living in Chicago, I started my own voice studio. Unfortunately, after a couple of years I had to close shop when I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue my postgraduate degree in musical theatre. I directed, stage managed, and assistant directed many musical theatre productions and musical performances in Chicago, Nashville, Washington D.C. and London. I have had ten years of varied professional experience in the industry both on and off stage. Read More

I believe it is important to build a strong technical foundation and knowledge of the mechanics of the voice, while also focusing on performance and real-world musicianship. With contemporary music theory (beginning to advanced) integrated into each lesson, students learn to understand and apply a musical vocabulary that is necessary to communicate in the industry. As a vocalist myself, I think too often singers have trouble communicating with their bands in a rehearsal setting or with producers and engineers in a recording setting; therefor I see the benefit in students being able to identify the grooves and "feels" of their selected pieces as well as being able to count-in a band. I know I'm doing my job when my student is growing not only in their abilities, but in their love of music! Ensuring that each student is learning repertoire that they enjoy at a pace that suits them is central to my teaching style. I love to find each student's strengths and celebrate them, as well as targeting goals for improvement in a warm, safe setting. I believe that music is meant to bring joy and healing to people, whether you are listening to it or making it. Read More

My teaching style is non judgemental, holistic and trauma informed. I focus heavily on making sure my student is truly comfortable and feels safe in their lessons, and in my experience, this is critical to ensure progress and good technique. I take notes during lessons to ensure that goals are set and achieved, and I spend at least two hours a week just brainstorming repertoire and technical exercises for my students based on their needs. For beginner students, I start with the fundamentals of music and we work our way up to integrating repertoire that they will eventually be able to perform in recitals and shows! I am a very flexible teacher and I understand firsthand that to remain interested in learning music, a student needs to feel included in the choices regarding what they are working on. With that in mind, I like to use both repertoire that a student has brought in, and repertoire that I choose very carefully to suit a particular student's strengths and challenges. Read More

My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. I really emphasize getting students to read music and also understand the key components of music theory, so that they understand what it is they are playing. Read More

Meeting my students where they are at and focusing on their individual needs is the most important thing. And taking away pressure. Learning how to sing is a journey you embark upon. Singing is a joyfull, fun way to grow as a person and as an artist. It takes concentration and focus, though and a willingness to try out new things and very importantly: patience with oneself. I find, especially young adults can gain so much confidence by singing and by making music in general. Read More
