For piano I prefer Faber Piano Adventures and have different books I would recommend starting with depending on the students age and experience. For guitar and ukulele I prefer using the Hal Leonard method books. I often supplement these method books with outside sources and pieces as is appropriate for the student. For singing students, I have a wide variety of books and resources depending on the musical style. I come from a classical voice background, so when students are middle school age and older (sometimes earlier) we begin learning Italian Art songs in addition to musical theater pieces and English folk songs. I love working with students of all ages and skill levels, and one of my biggest rewards as a teacher is seeing students improve and love music more and more each week. I work with students to develop their own unique goals for their lessons. Some students are putting together a full recital or prepping for auditions. With every student, no matter the age, I like to get an idea of their goals intended, or help them develop goals along the way. Everyone wants to play music for different reasons, and I like to keep that in mind for each student. However, regardless of the goal, my philosophy is to empower each student to discover their sound and voice on their instrument. I am an encouraging teacher, but I help my students set realistic goals (and stretch goals!) that keep them motivated to progress in their musicianship. How our lessons progress really depends on the student in question. If they would like to pursue competitions, I am well equipped to help.
