Generally, I like to discuss what kind of music the students are interested in studying first. Then, after vocalizing and assessing the voice, I'll start the students with English art songs or 24 Italian Songs Arias, or some classic music theater repertoire. I also believe that music in itself can be used as a means through which the world can be impacted for good. I will work invariably though with all students in building a solid vocal technique based on singing with the air flow and always promoting a healthy tone quality. Teaching voice is something that I believe requires highly personalized lesson plans, and so there are books for which to acquire basic theory, note-reading, and sight-singing, but usually, lessons must be repertoire based, and conceptual. Students usually have an idea of certain songs they would like to learn, and I believe it is very important to enable them to sing what they like to sing. However, I will also suggest repertoire that they are unfamiliar with, or initially uncomfortable with to broaden their musical knowledge and appreciation, and also to address certain skill sets. Her song, "Lullaby," was also a Regional Winner in Flavorpill's A Band Apart competition and was featured on the Chicago Regional Winners mixtape. She was chosen as a Semi-Finalist in the Intel Superstars Competition and as a regional Semi-Finalist in the OurStage Warped Tour Competition. She has opened for Marky Ramone the Speed Kings, D.I., Rev. Norb the Onions, and Val Emmich. In 2015, Mary released a 5-song EP with her band, Mary The Immaculate Rejections, and most recently, she released a 3-song EP of old recordings, entitled "Coal Miner's Granddaughter: The Lost Tapes."
