I started teaching private voice lessons in 1984 during my junior year at Oberlin. While at Yale, I was awarded a teaching assistantship (1986-88). Since then I have maintained a private studio of voice students in Chicago. Ive had experience both with students who love classical music to those who sing musical theater, spirituals, choral singers, etc. I love teaching and nothing is more gratifying than hearing a students progress. Regular practice, especially for younger students, is essential as it helps to create a progressive connection to their instrument. I've found that selecting music WITH my student, and not just assigning work that I want them to like, goes a long way in helping students enjoy singing and motivates them to practice and continue to learn. Beginning students will start out with technique practices, while introducing solo literature when appropriate. Technique studies can always be improved and studied, no matter a student's age or proficiency. I try to work within the repertoire a student is interested in at first, then expanding to materials and genres the student may find interesting to help broaden the experience and knowledge a student can gain from our lessons. No matter the age or ability level, I help students understand that each lesson and new idea or piece we learn adds to their experience, and experiences are building blocks for our futures.
