I began teaching in 2009, with private students. The following year, I began working with non-profit organization, for two years, that brought music to at-risk and underprivileged children. After working with them, I began working with the Baton Rouge Arts Council, bringing music and music appreciation to elementary school class rooms for children and schools that did not have a music teacher, on staff. I also ask students what goals they have in learning the instrument, what they would like to be able to do in 6 months to a year. Based on that information, I move forward with music notation and performance. For this age group, I believe acknowledging their progress and achievement is critical. I have been a musician almost my whole life, starting out as a singer in a children's church choir when I was five. I started playing cello in the fourth grade through the public school system in California. I am classically trained, but I love all different styles of music. I enjoy accommodating students with the exact type of lessons they need. For beginners I use a slow approach at first, attempting to minimize the chance of bad habits. We begin with starting with proper hold of the instruments, left hand placement, and simple pizzicato; the same would be done with guitar. I don't not use practice/lesson books. Unless the student wants to use it , I don't insist. I approach each student differently . I take it at their speed.
