I am a positive and encouraging instructor, and emphasize proper technique, music theory, and fundamentals through a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to popular music. My students are all ages (I once had a student start at the age of 70!) and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I work with students to help them balance a practice schedule with the rest of their lives. For orchestra students I usually use Essential Elements to begin for the first two to three years. I also use the Suzuki method and books for studying above what they are learning in the classroom. For voice and orchestra students I also find out what they are most interested in and what styles they want to learn and incorporate that into my lessons as well. For the beginning string player I like to start with a Hal Leonard method book to communicate and help string players master the basics. Once the student has progressed I will begin some solo repertoire from varying genres. I find it is always helpful to allow students to play music that they enjoy - experiencing a range of both popular and classical pieces to broaden their horizons. I also ask students what goals they have in learning the instrument, what they would like to be able to do in 6 months to a year. Based on that information, I move forward with music notation and performance. For this age group, I believe acknowledging their progress and achievement is critical. Smaller acknowledgements could be presented during a semester. Larger acknowledgements, such as a recital and reception, certainly can encourage a student to move forward. Read More

As a cellist and pianist, I have enjoyed an international performance career as a chamber music player, soloist, and string orchestra musician. As a performer, I love chamber music and soloist playing, both music paths that I have been cultivating and expanding.
