I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My methods of choice for instruction are many due to the amount of instruments that I teach and the many levels of mastery within each concentration. For most woodwinds I begin with the Rubank family of methods and duet books. I favor many of the Berklee press books for music theory, voice, keyboards, genre studies, guitar, bass, composition, ear training, harmony and arranging. I make the study materials cut across other areas of musicianship like sight-reading (by notating their choice of songs), technical etudes/studies to improve physical fitness such as accuracy, tone quality, articulation on the instrument, harmony, and history. Asides teaching musical instruments, my students and I discuss artistic goals and music business especially for those who would like to make a living as full-time musicians.
