For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). Once it becomes clear what excites the student the most, I provide the nourishment and structure necessary for fun and progression. I custom tailor our lessons to their wants and needs. If the student has been playing their instrument without lessons I investigate what sounds and styles they apparently are drawn to and consider that when planning lessons.
