Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Piccolo
I am an instructor that focuses on building the whole musician. I can teach multiple disciplines including classical, baroque, jazz, latin jazz, Brazilian, rock, middle eastern, and others. In the last several years I have learned about flute pedagogy and teaching artistry from Marco Granados, audition repertoire and standard repertoire from the BSO's Clint Foreman, and baroque flute/period performance from Na'ama Lion. My philosophy is that flute instruction should extend beyond western concert music and conventional repertoire to build versatile musicians prepared for the modern musical world through a Socratic teaching method that builds the desire to learn. Instruments: Piano Guitar Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I start of my lessons by asking how much the student practiced for the week. Then I ask them if there was anything that was confusing for them so we can work on that first. I let the student pick what they want to start with first and then I will pick the next exercise. I finish with giving them a homework assignment and making sure they understand what to practice for next week. Read More

Each student has different methods that fit them. My job is to quickly find out the best way for each student. Have you been having trouble learning saxophone? No problem. I will guide you to learn how to learn. You don't know where to start? No problem. I will help you to set up short term goals, medium term goals, and long term goals. You think you need a little push? Read More

Having said that, possibly an even more pressing skill would be to be equppied, physically and intelectually, to play along with an impromtu music session, or "jam." If, say, a former clarinet student of mine should find him or herelf in the company of a strumming acoustic guitarist, it is my hope that they will be condfident and able to contribute musically and sensibly without the need for sheet music. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Music
Fundamentals come from slow practice, and unfortunately, there is no true fun way of doing it. However, I pair technical work with listening assignments, so that the students actually see the point of fundamental training. Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. The book itself may be insufficient, but the auxiliary exercises I designed will improve the practice efficiency. Read More

For younger students, I typically assist and follow the method books students are working on. For example, they may use Standards of Excellence or Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. These lesson books are crucial to teaching the fundamentals as a student is beginning to learn an instrument. I will break away from the books and introduce appropriate solo repertoire. I will also be mindful to the interests of the students to keep them engaged. Read More

The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). I do focus on things in order though. If you don't know your fundamentals, then that's where we start no matter what. After learning fundamentals, however, we can begin to pick and choose the battles and wars. Read More
