I've played piano and saxophone for over 25 years and studied jazz composition at Berklee College of Music. The teachers that I was fortunate enough to learn from as I grew up were so important in my musical development, and they kept me interested in continuing with music! I understand just how important specialized attention to talents and interests are in beginners and all other levels. So my focus is always trying to make sure my students are enjoying their instruments every step of the way, while providing the structure and expert assistance that will bring the progress that students need to experience.
I play saxophone and keyboards in a nationally touring funk band. We regularly headline music festivals and currently focus our shows in and around New England. I've also recorded on several acclaimed artists' albums. I have a background in jazz and studied Piano and Saxophone Performance and Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music. My teachers were amazing as I progressed through the schools. And they were so fun and inspiring that I want to make playing piano or saxophone as exciting and rewarding for you as it was for me! I currently teach at a music school in Plymouth and travel to students' homes.
I take the time to get to know the student and which methods would best benefit and keep the spark ignited. For standard piano lessons, Bastien and Faber methods are always a hit with both children and adults. For Saxophone lessons I use the "Standard of Excellence" book that most school bands use. I have also written a lesson book of my own that I use pages from. If the student would prefer presenting their favorite records/songs and learning the styles and sounds that they hear, we can go down that road! Want to get better at playing with a band? Once it becomes clear what excites the student the most, I provide the nourishment and structure necessary for fun and progression. I custom tailor our lessons to their wants and needs. If the student has been playing their instrument without lessons I investigate what sounds and styles they apparently are drawn to and consider that when planning lessons. I do a lot of prep work at home and often custom design printouts to supplement any book we will be reading from. I can also teach / write out favorite songs that not be available in any book or online. Favorite movies are great to know sometimes as there are thousands of soundtrack books out there!
