Hello! I'm a Berklee College of Music Alumnus with 20+ years playing experience! I started studying the saxophone at 9 years old and spent most of my early school years performing in community, school, and local college jazz bands around the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington State. My music has given me the opportunity to travel the world, and in summer of 2016, I conducted a tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda with my band the AfroXchange in conjunction with music therapy organization Global Youth Groove where I hosted jazz masterclasses, as well as performed at clubs and festivals, and assisted a music therapy team around the countryside. For beginning students I like to start with a method book, such as "Tradition of Excellence". This allows students to start from the very beginning, especially if the student does not have previous music reading experience. I teach reading and playing hand in hand so that it becomes a memorized process. After working through the method book, I will create individualized lesson plans, to include solo repertoire, band music, or other methods books. Read More

The aforementioned points tend to help the student progress and gain a passion for whatever they're studying in music. I've also found that a curriculum that is full of listening homework from all over the world and all throughout history to go a long way in helping students learn things they might not have even known they liked or loved. My students are encouraged to enter the world free of fear, be it performing and or writing music. Read More

Each student learns at his or her own pace, and as a result I dislike forcing all students into the same step-by-step regimen. I find that laying out preplanned expectations and milestones at the outset is often more for the teachers benefit than the students. Individualizing lesson plans and progress trajectories is much more work on my end, but I find the result much more rewarding for both instructor and student. Read More

I am a great believer in the importance of a guided warmup routine and have developed a practical method for students to acquire facility with all of their scales and arpeggios in all the keys with various articulations in a logical and efficient way using standard materials. This is backed up with a "saxophone curriculum" to bring a student from beginning stages all the way to solo recitals at a college level. Read More

I believe that fundamentals are the basis of a great music education. Reading skills, playing skills, and ear training are all extremely important to learning music. For me, seeing the development of a student over time and seeing them meet their goals is one of the best feelings in the world. That is why, in my instruction, I try to set realistic and reasonable goals for each skill level to hit that are more defined than state standards. Read More

I start of my lessons by asking how much the student practiced for the week. Then I ask them if there was anything that was confusing for them so we can work on that first. I let the student pick what they want to start with first and then I will pick the next exercise. I finish with giving them a homework assignment and making sure they understand what to practice for next week. Read More
