Overview:
I'm a recent transplant to Brooklyn, NY after spending seven wonderful years studying and working in Boston! Originally from Gainesville, Florida, I first learned piano, then added saxophone, clarinet, flute, and bass in my middle and high school years. I went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston. I'm excited to pass my love of many genres of music onto my students through the teaching experience I've built over the years!
EXPERIENCE
I have had various private students since 2006, teaching students in many topics including, saxophone, clarinet, jazz theory, composition, improvisation, and jazz piano. From summer of 2013 to spring of 2018 I taught private saxophone and clarinet lessons for Shrewsbury Public Schools, while taking private piano, clarinet, and theory students from the Music Teachers Network referral until 2017. In addition to privately-acquired students, I also served as an interim saxophone instructor for the Prodigy Program at Westwood Public Schools. As a recent transplant to Brooklyn, I look forward to using my experience to build a successful portfolio of new students in New York. My goals are to help each student build solid musical and instrumental fundamentals, to guide students in exploring their own personalized interests and passions within music, and to help students develop qualities of confidence, hard work, and empathy that come with experiencing music and will serve them in all areas of their lives.
METHODS USED
For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. In developing a complete musician, I want to offer support for my students' other musical activities, as well as provide them with resources that they might not have elsewhere.
LESSON STYLE
I consider myself a laid back teacher who still has solid expectations. I understand that each student's feasible time commitment may be different and I would like to honor that. With that said, I expect my students to put time into their music, because that is the only way to make progress and to maximize their ultimate enjoyment of playing an instrument. I will set realistic weekly goals for each student, trying to balance their interests with my evaluation of what they need to work on to make the most progress.
