Ever since high school, I have enjoyed teaching other students. In college, I would travel to nearby schools to tutor middle and high school instrumental students. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. My teaching experience dates back to my pre-college/ post high school days where I was a volunteer director of a community ensemble in Jamaica. This opportunity opened doors for me to teach music theory and private saxophone and flute lessons in a community based project that was geared towards using music for social development and change in the inner city youth. I eventually moved on to the college setting where I served as a Graduate Assistant who had the responsibility of providing private and supplemental lessons to students who were enrolled in the University, all while operating a private studio of my own. For brand new students, I usually like to do an assessment of where they are starting in order to recommend the best method books to use that way there is no fear of being overwhelmed in the process of developing. Fundamental techniques are also used in order to gauge what direction to go as the instruction proceeds.
