It's all about having a clear goal in mind and working towards it: we'll have conversations about objectives and musical preferences (classical? jazz? rock and pop?) and then develop goals based on those preferences (playing live? what kind of pieces/songs?). Once I have an idea of where the student wants to be, I share my lesson plans with them and tell them what particular exercises or songs/pieces will fit those goals. Read More

I am a passionate and professional music teacher who has been teaching music for over a decade. I learned guitar at the age of fifteen and never stopped learning! I was in both the Marching Band and high school varsity band during the mid 2000s and after that I recorded an acoustic album which features both my guitar playing and singing. I believe music itself is both an expression and a feeling and having the ability to teach this skill set to others is a pleasure to me. Read More

I start beginning students that are interested in learning to play guitar with rhythm for the strumming hand. I will then move on to the fretting hand to finger positioning as well as learning the notes (on the guitar fingerboard) as heard at concert pitch. Music theory will be taught as applied to the guitar. I do not use any published books for teaching but prefer to develop my own lessons plans customized to each students interest and ability. My methods are largely dependent upon the personality and learning style of my students. One thing is always constant in my teaching, and that is the monitoring of the students ability to read and interpret written music and tablature. The first week or two is devoted solely to establishing a basic ability to site-read music within the student. From that point, the journey into the world of guitar begins. I tend to employ the Hal Leonard method of teaching, following along with several of the Hal Leonard guitar books, for electric and acoustic guitars, also bass. Read More

It's important to cultivate a student's musical knowledge by building upon their current foundation. Similar to the way children learn a language, music students of all ages should start by listening and singing/playing before learning to read and even write. Combining this natural approach with a focus on how and why to develop good technique helps students get the results they're looking for. Read More
