This gives an opportunity to build a really solid foundation of music theory and music reading at the same time. Older beginners I take through a checklist of basic theory fundamentals of my own creation, basic chords and basic scales. Then we choose a song to learn that applies that foundation. If a student comes in knowing absolutely nothing about music, I will start with teaching basic music theory. Extensive knowledge of music theory is not essential, but a basic grasp will make the learning process much smoother. From there - for stringed instruments - we'll move onto hand conditioning. I then assign daily exercises that the student can utilize to begin to build control and virtuosity with their instrument.
