I adapt my lesson plan according to the student's level, interests and hobbies away from music. All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. Once this has been achieved or if the student is already past this level, I like to inquire about what the student wants to learn and improve on. With this information, I give them resources or step by step guidelines to help them with their goal. Read More

my experiences as a musician include performing in both classical and jazz groups in every venue imaginable. These performances include recital halls, banquet halls, school auditoriums, night clubs, bars, restaurants, weddings, parties, church ceremonies, community theater and parades. I encourage my students to practice like I practice and to perform as often as they can. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly. Read More

I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I like to make things fun and cater to each student's abilities and needs. I like to work from books with beginning students because music literacy is very important to me. As students develop, I begin ear training and diving deeper into music theory when necessary. I think in order to grow as a musician you need to play music that inspires you and I aim to have all students wanting to practice because they are excited about their repertoire. Read More

For absolute beginner students of any age, we begin outside of a book as the best way to learn is from personal experience. With wind players for example, we work on breathing, posture, and hand position as these three components help students produce a quality sound in as comfortable of a way as possible. Moving into more formal studies, I used the Standard of Excellence series for young children and the Rubank series for more intermediate students. Read More

After graduating from college, I began teaching privately in my home state of Texas at the middle and high school levels in New Braunfels and Austin. Soon, I began teaching adults as well and when I moved to Washington D.C. in fall of 2006, I became the Music Instructor at The Art and Drama Therapy Institute, a center for adults with developmental disabilities. This experience had a great impact on me in terms of understanding the big picture in that the goals and methods relating to the technical aspects of music lessons, but the grand value that music offers in terms of the emotional and spiritual rewards as well.
