After I've gotten to know the pace of learning for the student I will then create a custom lesson plan to ensure the student doesn't get either overwhelmed or bored. It is important to figure out the goals of the student and work towards achieving them. Each student is different and will work at his or her own pace. I believe that anyone at any age is capable of learning an instrument if they are a serious student. Read More

For me, I always like to do a mix of what is fundamentally good to do as well as do what the students want. You will find in younger kids that it is very easy for them to lose motivation. Something I've learned through teaching elementary is that students love being given autonomy in their education, and it motivates them to continue. For beginning students, I like to start on Essential elements. Read More

From then on, we can start on method books--I generally use either Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence--and some extra short pieces I compose for them based on their needs. I also spend time working on ear training and overtone control as soon a I think a student is ready. The sooner they learn these elements, the easier it will be for them to learn more. For more advanced students, I like basing lessons around repertoire, but that repertoire can vary a great deal based on their needs. Read More

I feel it's important to tailor my teaching style to each student. Overall I like to keep a low -pressure, fun approach but am a stickler for the importance of learning traditional scales and exercises as well as proper notation. I don't believe you can fully learn either sax or piano without learning to read music, so I also teach notation skills. For children, I use stickers, tattoos and prizes to keep them motivated and engaged. Read More

I started my teaching career in 1996, teaching at the same music studio where I took lessons when I was younger. I try to carry some of the teaching techniques that were shown to me when I was taking lessons into my own style of teaching. This includes making the lesson fun as well as educational for the student. Daily practice is strongly encouraged, as well as playing with other musicians, recitals, and writing their own songs. I do tend to assign, as mentioned elsewhere, listening homework. I do this because I've seen it help students learn what they want to and need to learn faster as well as help students learn to like, love, or at least appreciate new things. The main point here is that every student is complex, difficult, and hard insomuch as teaching method required, but my passion is so great that I don't see issues or problems but rather new opportunities to get students excited about learning and demonstrating what they've learned. I am an instructor that focuses on building the whole musician. I can teach multiple disciplines including classical, baroque, jazz, latin jazz, Brazilian, rock, middle eastern, and others. In the last several years I have learned about flute pedagogy and teaching artistry from Marco Granados, audition repertoire and standard repertoire from the BSO's Clint Foreman, and baroque flute/period performance from Na'ama Lion. My philosophy is that flute instruction should extend beyond western concert music and conventional repertoire to build versatile musicians prepared for the modern musical world through a Socratic teaching method that builds the desire to learn.
