I like to select a basic book on fundamentals supplemented with blues, popular, or jazz or seasonal music to Motivate the student. There will be some attention to scales and how chords are built along with other theory as it applies to the pieces they are studying. Some attention is required due to the cycle of fifths and why some keys are selected more than others. For me it is essential that a student learn first all the techniques exercises and then start to create music. My area of expertise is Sight Reading. This is an essential aspect of learning to play any instrument. A good sight reader is always able to learn their pieces faster and be better performers.
