I have played the piano since childhood and specialize in the classical repertoire, as I believe it offers the most comprehensive method of attaining instrumental mastery. However, I will not hesitate to use any material that interests a student, in any genre, provided sheet music is available. I can play jazz and improvise fluently and have also played in blues bands, but prefer to devote myself to classical music. My teaching style is light and fun and geared to the temperament of the child and the specific goals of the parent. My methods are traditional pedagogy. With younger students under the age of 5 and special needs students I make use of tactical manipulatives for example play doh to assist with fine motor skills. I only teach Intermediate and Advanced students, and my method really depends on the particular student. I don't believe in a single, "core curriculum" for piano-playing. It really depends on the students' goals, strengths/weaknesses, etc. For my beginning intermediate students, I usually give a selection of little pieces to learn by Bach, Schubert, and Schumann to start developing their ear and sense of rhythm/musicality.
