I am a classically trained vocalist, but my true calling is music education. Raised in a very musical family full of teachers, I was singing before I was talking and I started taking piano lessons at the age of 6. I hold a bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Education from the University of Tulsa and I have served as a choir director, taught general music, choral ensembles, fine arts, and musical theatre, and have several years of private voice and piano teaching experience. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

I have a variety of books I use for beginning students, depending on age and level, including the Alfred guitar book for kids. Regardless of level, I always help students learn some music they are already interested in, as that is a key path to enjoying both the pure joy of music itself and the delight of learning something you didn't know you could do. Another important pathway that I explore with students, earlier or later depending on the student, is to begin to learn to improvise and compose their own music. Read More

Depending upon the playing ability of the student, I pick books and methods that teach the fundamentals of reading music and technical exercises. Repertoire is dependent upon the style of music in which they are interested; I teach both Classical and Jazz and they are totally different in content, although the harmony and chord progressions are similar. For beginning students, I utilize books by Alfred, or John Thompson, for example. Read More

I am experienced professional mallet percussionist and bandleader with an emphasis on jazz and improvisation. In 2013, I was the first jazz vibraphonist be accepted in to The Juilliard School where I had the opportunity to mentor classical percussionists on how to improvise. Prior to Juilliard, I first attended Oklahoma City University studying music education/percussion performance. After studying for two years at OCU, I decided to transfer to Berklee College of Music to study with Ed Saindon and Dave Samuels, and to be closer to my mentor, Stefon Harris. Read More

Furthermore, the reason why I want to be an educator lies in my fundamental belief in the potential of every student. While I eventually became a high performing student, for a number of years I underperformed and had to deal with other peoples notions about my capacity to succeed. To see the dramatic turn I took with academics motivates me to set the same example for other students who may once be in the same position I was. Read More
