For others, this may mean complimenting technical training with music games or physical exercises, during which the student is able to learn valuable concepts away from the instrument. By taking the time to build a personal rapport with my students, I aim to not only impart technical skills, but also give them the tools to foster their own creativity, and build confidence that will have a positive impact on other areas of life. One of my strengths as a teacher is adapting my teaching style to fit the needs of any student I'm working with. For some students, concepts come easily and their motivation is very clear, but for others, it's not always so easy. I use patience, clear communication, and having fun to get knowledge across to my students! To me music is about connection and expression, and my goal is to get my students to feel that! I also understand that learning new things can make you vulnerable and frustrated so I try to be more relatable as opposed to an authority figure with my students. However, if I see that a student is not respecting themselves and their goals (not practicing, discouraging behavior) I will be a bit more strict in order to motivate them. Read More

I tend to tailor my method for the individual goals and desires of the student. Generally, for my beginning students, I assign a regiment of short pieces and technical etudes from a variety of method books. I find this to be an effective way to build technique while also cultivating musicality. As a student advances, I begin assigning works from the standard cello repertoire, which includes pieces such as Bach Cello Suites, concertos, and sonatas. Read More

When I teach students I prefer to keep them organized on a seasonal basis; setting goals for the long term and the short term so that the student is busy and occupied. Every student has a different approach to learning and it is important to develop a plan that works for every student. I usually recommend that students keep track of their practising in a journal so that they can reflect on their goals and development. Read More
