The primary emphasis is on giving students a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of cello technique -- a relaxed, comfortable hand position, correct intonation, bowing, and tone production. The basics of music (reading and counting) will be covered as needed. As the beginning student progresses, more advanced techniques, including shifting, double stops, and phrasing, will be introduced.

I began teaching during my undergrad work and now have over 9 years of experience providing private lessons in saxophone, clarinet, flute, music theory, and conducting.  I have worked with students from elementary school through college as well as adults, and in addition to my private studio, I am also the resident woodwinds instructor at 3 community music schools in the LA area.  My main aim as a teacher is to enrich the lives of my students, whatever their specific goals.  Studying music can grant anyone an opportunity to develop competitive study skills and work ethic, and can have far reaching influence in all kinds of seemingly-unrelated subjects.  Most importantly, making music should be fun and rewarding!

My educational background includes a Single Subject Teaching Credential, and a Bachelor and Masters Degree in classical and jazz studies.  As an educator I have produced outcomes of first place awards with superior ratings in instrumental music festival/competitions local and state wide. In 2003 I established Knights of Music Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization to provide music literacy after school to children attending public elementary schools that do not provide instrumental music as part of their curriculum.

I have been teaching private voice since high school, where I took on my first 8 year old student. I continued teaching lessons all through college, giving private instruction and theory tutoring to my classmates and fellow vocal performance students. It was there that I found my knack for repertoire and audition preparation; as a board member for the Berklee Musical Theater club, club members would often seek me out to select appropriate repertoire and rehears for their auditions. When I take on a student I am committed and dedicated to his/her musical journey, and I want to offer them everything I can. I've always had a focus on performance and believe that the confidence and courage that come with performance experience translate into all areas of life.

I've been teaching private Suzuki method violin lessons as well as music theory since I was a teenager. More recently I've coached musical theater singers and youth pop and rock bands. I worked with teenagers in group and individual coaching as a TA for the University of the Arts Pre-College Musical Theater Program. I taught group and individual vocal lessons and was a band leader with Beyond Rock summer camp on Long Island, NY. I currently teach integrated music skills with the Rios Music Project in Carlsbad, CA. I've had experience with everything from classical violin competitions to professional musical theater auditions to music industry showcases. I'm your gal for practical, real-world music skills, including collaboration, improvisation, and songwriting. My strong classical background and technique supports my eclectic musical pursuits, and I encourage my students to practice the basics and build their technique as well as follow their interests to whatever genre and instrument catches their heart! I love working with kids of all ages, and welcome adult students as well!
