Overview:
I am a highly skilled and creative musician who is specialized in guitar, teaching and composition. I work with all ages and skill levels ranging from beginner to professional. I will customize student’s lessons to fit their goals and learning styles. I work at the student’s pace while encouraging them to practice and explore the instrument on their own time. I currently play in an R&B band, a rock band and a jazz band performing shows around greater Los Angeles. I'm also in the middle of recording my own compositions for my future solo album. From performing a wide range of genres and working with a variety of musicians I now have a very holistic approach to teaching my students, and helping them achieve their musical goals.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started while I was in college working on my Bachelor of Music degree. I gave private lessons to fellow students at my college and also was a substitute teacher for the music school in my hometown. From working with multiple guitar teachers over the course of 10 years, I have picked up on what did and did help me when I was learning. From that, I am able to adapt my methods for the individual student. I encourage my students to practice consistently and to explore the instrument and music on their own time. I now currently work for two music schools and teach independently and am always looking to work with new students!
METHODS USED
For my students, I tailor my methods based on the specific student's musical goals and their experience. I use a combination of method books and my own original teaching material to emphasize certain topics/skills. Instead of going from one page to the next in a music book, I like to combine multiple books and original practices to keep my students interested. Some of my students want to learn theory, some want to learn improvisation and some just want to learn their favorite songs. By having a plethora of music books and original material I am able to customize each lesson for my students.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is all about enjoying music and the instrument. I can pick up when a student is frustrated, confused or embarrassed and adjust the lesson accordingly. Overall, I want my students to have fun! I enjoy teaching how to read music and once a few notes are learned, I start applying it to songs that my students really enjoy. I also like to teach scales and harmonic structure so my students can begin to understand what's really going on in the music they enjoy. This also helps with original composition and soloing if the student is interested in writing their own material.
