I structure my lessons in the same way I structure my own personal practice. I usually start off with a few technical exercises, then cover some theory, and then work on repertoire. How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. My goal will be to teach the student how to practice independently. I recommend setting up a practice schedule so that they know when they are supposed to practice. If the student is struggling with any of the weekly assignments, that is ok! Simply let me know at the next lesson so I know right where to help. For beginner students I use the Hal Leonard method to teach reading and positioning. Chords I teach at the pace the student is learning to play them cleanly (and this varies tremendously), starting with the easier open chords and moving on to progressively more difficult voicings.
