My methods vary from student to student. I believe strongly in making sure students are learning what they want to learn and adapting to every students needs! While I will employ different techniques with each student, I do tend to use several concepts universally. I like to use a Kodly based system to teach all styles of music. All music is taught through internalization by listening and analyzing and then emulation of what is heard. Read More

Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. Music can also be heard or read, so I try to strike a balance between reading music/theory and learning/improvising by ear. Read More

First of all, I always make my students enjoy music when they are learning anything from me. With beginners, I always be patient and kind, especially with young kids. Always singing songs with them, playing together with them and at the same time we will do some music games together. It helps young kids to get to know music and at the same time they won't get bored! Although sometimes they don't want to practice, it won't be a problem to me because we can always do other things like music theory, music introduction and singing when they are tired. Read More

I usually start my beginning piano students who are children, in Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Lesson Book 1A. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. I also like to find out the student's individual interest and find repertoire that they are interested in learning and that are aligned with their current skills. Read More

I strongly believe in utilizing differentiation in teaching music which is why I gravitate towards private instruction. I understand that every student has different learning capabilities which is why I cater each lesson to each student's unique abilities. I work with each student at their own pace to learn and improve upon their skills as a musician. I also make sure to include music that they are excited to play as a way to encourage musical stewardship and reinforce music fundamentals and instrumental techniques. Read More

My method uses hard work and dedication, but also uses broad ideas to achieve your playing goals. In music what is the goal? The sound is the goal. The sound is everything. We will focus on this in lessons with critical thinking and listening to music. In order for this to work, we must also work on your person, or being a nice person. There is no judging in my studio. I've been teaching private instrumental and general classroom music for over 30 years. As a child, I received many music lessons on piano and drums and percussion. I decided to focus more on drums and percussion because it offered more in terms of opportunities to perform in school bands and orchestras. In high school, my friends and I formed our own band. Having this experience proved invaluable in my professional life, as I continue to form and promote bands to this day. Read More
