Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet
I use traditional and self developed techniques for instruction. I am very flexible with my teaching styles and am very patient with new students. I use method books and audio and visual aids. I teach both reading music with theory and ear training. I require that all students are able to master all major and minor scales, which I have developed a very simple to learn method to achieve this goal with a 100% success rate. Read More
Instruments: Violin Viola Music
I teach Classically trained Violin, viola, and piano. I am equally comfortable teaching very beginners as well as high school and adult students. I am very honest in my feedback. I like to stick to the former. I strongly believe that a good, strong foundation leads to fewer problems in the future and makes the process of music-making much more enjoyable. My main goal is to help raise individuals, who are critical thinkers, who are passionate about what they do, and who will take their love of music into the adulthood whether playing it professionally or as an amateur. Instruments: Saxophone Flute Drums Recorder Music
I am very passionate about music. I love to teach and pass along what i know so that others can continue to create music for profit and personal enjoyment. I am a very low pressure teacher. If you are not enjoying your time then no one is benefiting from the lessons. I use a marker board, books, a metronome, paper and pencils etc to tech lessons. I do not send home "homework" but i will assign practice exercises for students to do between classes and will check on the progress and results when we meet for our next lesson. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
After carefully assessing each of my students, and determining whether or not he or she are beginners, intermediate or advanced, I start them in the lesson book that is according to the level they are at. I teach from Alfred's Piano Course, but if my student has a piano book already, it is not a problem to teach from that series. Once my student has progressed and has a strong understanding of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire for their recitals and personal interest. Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet Oboe English Horn
I have been teaching private lessons since my college days. I have experience teaching multiple instruments and consider myself proficient at making each student achieve their very best. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Trombone Recorder Euphonium
For children, my foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisation, writing original compositions, and learning music that the students have brought to the lesson. For adults, we focus on what students are interested in working on, regardless of their ability level. Many adults want to spend part of the lesson working with the foundational methods, and spend part of the lesson learning one or two pieces of music. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is just that, going over and over a lick, and part in your music that you don’t understand.
Developing a regiment for this is suggested by the instructor. This does not mean it works for you. Try short bursts of time/energy, say 1-2 bars of a passage that you just can’t get in Tempo.
Slow it down, use your metronome at a slow marking that you don’t make mistakes, slowly build up the tempo until you reach the desired tempo. This helps you get over the hump, also try 10-15 minutes several time a day, this helps your concentration, and I bet you have plenty of other things to do.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They have asked you for an instrument, so that’s good, but do they really need lessons? This is a tough question. Beginners do need some type of instruction, how to hold the instrument, how to make sounds, properly, but some beginners learn from others or are a natural. Try to pick and instrument that requires little expense, buy a used guitar, not a new one. If money is no object, then buy the new one. Most beginners think they want to play an instrument, but when they start, and don’t really get into it, they lose interest. I suggest you decide on an instructor and take 4 lessons, step back and evaluate the lessons with your child.
When will I start to see results?
Some beginning students take 3-6 months to develop their musical awareness. Others longer, This depends on any physical limitations regarding the instrument of choice. The bass guitar requires callouses on the left hand to be comfortable. This takes awhile depending on the students practice time. If the student plays the Double bass, this requires bowing technique as well. This takes practice.
Keep conversation ongoing with your child, make sure this is working for them.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I did have inspiration, I listened to the radio and played bass lines to songs. My ears honed in on the bass
So I was able to hear the bass line and then find it on the instrument and memorize it. My influences were, Paul McCartney, still one of the best rock bass players alive today.
My parents always help me, my mom is a piano player and my dad sang in Barbour shop quartets and taught himself piano. Mostly, I decided I wanted to learn music and make it my main source of income.
