I create a customized curriculum based on the experience and age of each student. There are specific method books that I use, but my choices completely depend on the individual student and instrument that I am selecting material for. I like to create a well balanced curriculum of fun, technique and challenge in each lesson. Read More

I find that the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is watching a student develop a stronger passion for music than they had to begin with.Students are encouraged to make manageable goals for each lesson so that they can feel a sense of achievement throughout the entire learning process. The smaller goals keep the students motivated constantly enabling them to become a better musician. By focusing on the process of learning, students are learning a set of skills that will enable them to learn pieces quicker and allow for a more rewarding end product. Read More

After carefully assessing each of my students, and determining whether or not he or she are beginners, intermediate or advanced, I start them in the lesson book that is according to the level they are at. I teach from Alfred's Piano Course, but if my student has a piano book already, it is not a problem to teach from that series. Once my student has progressed and has a strong understanding of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire for their recitals and personal interest. Read More

I began teaching private lessons about two and a half years ago, in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I had students there that ranged in age from five to fifty, and it was such a joy to watch them grow! I am comfortable teaching students of all levels and ages, no one is ever too young or too old to learn an instrument in my opinion. It is very important to me to have parents involved in the learning process, whether that be through observation of lessons or helping out with practice throughout the week. Read More

My love for piano teaching began my senior year of high school, 7 years ago. I enjoy teaching out of my home studio, for I believe it provides a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere for my students. During lessons, I emphasize consistent weekly practice times, music genre variety, theory, improvisation and parent involvement in the lesson plans. Recitals have proven to be very helpful in building the students confidence and awareness of their personal and musical improvement. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs... Read More

I am a firm believer in having each student learn basic scales, starting with five finger patterns for beginners, since a solid grasp on this technique will aid them in learning any piece. For beginning younger students, I start teaching them from a method book that best suits their learning style. Since each student is different, one method does not fit every student, and I have taught Alfred's Premier Performer, Mayron Cole Piano Method, Hal Leonard, and more. Read More

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Yes, the Suzuki method is basically the most successful, however, my own personal style of learning by example and listening helps so much. The basic cord books and my own flash cards with recorded sounds seem to help so much when students practices on their own. I have found that there are so many on line visual aides where a student can watch a teacher/musician play and instruct on guitar. However, for some students, especially beginners, nothing compares with one on one instruction. Later in the student's progress, there are also really fun music books written using basic cords. These books allow beginners to play their favorite songs in learnable simple ways.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Well, a normal practice session is based on a student's needs. However, tuning up first is a must. Following this, we would go over what we worked on last to see if any progress has been made. If they have mastered to some extent the last lesson, then we go on to the next step. Constant encouragement is what I give every lesson. Learning to play can be difficult, so I show patience and have fun. The last thing we would do in a practice is to answer any questions the student would have and see what music the student listens to and is trying to play.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I do not have a music degree. I realize that going to college to study music would be a valuable resource. However, in my many years of playing and performing, I never had a teacher who had a degree and I never played in a band with anyone who had a music degree. I do not in any way mean to belittle higher learning. I have been to college and I have a degree that I am very proud of. My years of experience in teaching and playing my instrument have and will always speak for themselves when it comes to my students and my accomplishments.

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream piece to perform has changed as I have grown older. When I started, I wanted to be in a big rock band and play heavy metal music. I still like to play for an audience, but I prefer blues, bluegrass, and slide guitar in front of small audiences. However playing for my grandkids is so fun and gives me so much satisfaction. My how we change as performers and musicians with age.

Ten Tour Tips For Bands Hitting The Road This Summer

...the show, consider hitting the store to buy food and booze and splitting the cost with your bandmates.   You’ll all stand to save a decent amount of money if your band pitches in for the costs of food and drinks beforehand. Eating meals from the cooler once or twice a day can save you a ton of money. Another bit of advice though here, this only works if you purchase food that you’ll actually want to eat. If you buy unappetizing food, you’ll most likely break any promises you made to yourself before you left for tour by putting... Read More

Violin Accessories: Essentials for All Violinists

...violin case. There are two plugs on the ends of the tubes, so the strings don’t fall out. If you have no special string tube, stick with getting strings that come in paper envelopes. Your violin will have a chin rest – the place where your jaw rests as you play the violin. This chinrest sometimes comes loose. So, use a chinrest key to tighten the chinrest. The chinrest key is a small piece of metal, about an inch long, that is straight except for one tiny bend at the end – it looks like a short L with a loop of metal ... Read More

...is a concert A. All clarinets have the same basic fingerings, making it easy to switch between the different types. Some have a few extra keys (bass clarinet goes lower than Bb clarinet). The register key on a clarinet raises the note by a twelfth (octave and a fifth). This means the same fingering in one octave versus another octave produces a different note.   The most common types of clarinets are the Bb clarinet, the bass clarinet, the A clarinet, the Eb clarinet, the contrabass clarinet, the contra-alto clarinet, and the alto clarinet.   Bb Clarinet: The Bb clarinet, or soprano clarinet ... Jazz Scales: The Altered Scale

...altered however you want. The more it is altered, the tenser it will sound. A V7 with no altered tones creates the least amount of tension. It still creates tension because it feels like it needs to resolve to the I chord, but the tension is minimal. To create a more tense sounding chord we could alter the V7 chord to be a V7(#11), V7(b9), V7(#9), V7(#5), etc. We’ve learned a couple of the scales that correspond to the altered dominant chords. The diminished scale alters the ninth; the whole tone scale alters the fifth. There are also other ways to alter the dominant chord. You ... Read More
