I always start with getting to know the student and identifying his or her goals. What is the objective? From there, we will map out how we are going to get to that point. Most students' goal is to learn songs, so we will begin by identifying what those songs are. I will then figure out what skills are needed to play those songs, and we will start learning those skills at the most basic level possible, gradually increasing complexity until you have the ability to put those skills together and start rocking out! For beginning students, I usually teach with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books starting with book 1 to book 3. Once they are comfortable, and progression is recognized, I will introduce Suzuki Violin School. Not only do I solely focus on the music, I give students hand and bow exercises they can do during lessons or while just sitting at home watching TV. I also recommend that my students practice in the bathroom while at home because of the natural acoustics it provides. Read More

For all students, our first meeting will be an assessment to figure out where to start! I typically have students begin by playing something they are comfortable with that they enjoy, and we go from there. I am comfortable teaching a variety of methods and like to help the student achieve their individual goals, whatever those may be. I began teaching trumpet privately 44 years ago. Over the years I have added voice, beginning piano, trombone, euphonium,and recorder to my studio. I encourage each student to practice several times a week for as long as they can. I find that some students like to practice in one sitting, whereas others prefer to practice for 10-15 minutes before taking a break and then returning. Each student is different. My teaching style depends on the need of the student. However, generally, I will start with technical exercises to help the student work on a particular skill that can be used in a variety of songs (ex. tone production, vowels, diction).
