I have found success teaching when I can relate what we are doing on the trumpet to other elements of students lives. When I was teaching in Boston, the only thing my kids seemed to care about was Angry Birds. Instead of fighting for the kids attention, I transcribed the Angry Birds theme and had them learn it by ear. I teach using the Suzuki method with emphasis on scales, proper technique, and individual music preferences. For beginning students, I begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. Once the student begins to grasp the understanding of reading music, I transition to teaching scales, and into the Suzuki books. More advanced students will be learning out of the Position Pieces books by Rick Mooney, Foundational Studies by Alwin Schroeder, as well as any other music that they are interested in. Read More
