I follow the Suzuki method for beginner students, with some additional instruction to learn to read sheet music for those with previous music experience or older students who are ready to begin reading music. After the student has completed the first several books of the Suzuki method, I include selections from Solos for Young Violinists and other solo pieces as appropriate to reinforce certain skills. I have been playing trumpet since the summer of 2006 and have been in love with the art form ever since. I am also an advocate for historic music performance practice and an avid avant-garde performer. I hold degrees from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts high school program and the Eastman School of Music. I have taught private flute intermittently for the past 25 years, usually traveling to students' homes. I teach classical music as a foundation, while incorporating other types of music to keep it fun and interesting for the student. Many of my students have performed in recitals which I have organized, as well as in other performances that demand hard work and personal accomplishment. I have students from many different backgrounds and ages, and watching students grow from their musical endeavors and fall in love with music is one of the greatest achievements any teacher can have. For beginning students who are ages 8-13 will first use the Standard of Excellence red book and then they will transfer to the blue book. Intermediate and Advance will use the Foundations for superior performance book. We will start to pick solos that they are able to play and work on them. It is my belief that a teacher must be adaptive in order to create a positive experience for each student. For this reason, along with the lesson books, I prefer to help the student learn about what genre of music they are the most interested in. Some love to learn all types, but others have a "sweet" spot with certain composers or genres. I like to expound on that as much as possible, and help them to branch out from there. Read More

One thing I really enjoy about teaching is seeing my students find their love for music. This is why it is important for each student to feel accomplished at each lesson. This can be done by helping the student make and meet realistic goals that helps them see their progress and feel like they are continually moving forward.
