I do teach through lesson books but I've always found that they're better used as a guide rather than the focus of every lesson. My musical teaching goes back to high school, when I was the section leader in marching band on clarinet and the saxophone section leader in jazz band. I lead sectionals and helped those in my section learn the music and improve as players. I tried to make the sectional time as effective as possible, as we usually only had about 30 minutes. I create custom lessons for each student in my studio. Its important to me that students feel they are progressions towards their goals and I prioritize that in my lesson planning. I typically give students 2 or 3 songs to practice at a time, and I always include a classical or folk art song, and a musical theater song.
