I've had no official teaching positions yet, but I have had the opportunity to teach music in more casual contexts. Being the principal violist of the Lyceum Philharmonic for a year, I was tasked to conduct sectionals, and help the viola section become more solid. Also, I sometimes will help my younger brother with his piano practice, helping him solve musical problems, and enjoy playing more. For beginners looking to learn to read sheet music, I usually adopt the books of Michael Aaron or James Bastien (for small children). I began teaching lessons at age 14 to young neighborhood beginners. As I progressed through the years, I expanded my range of student ability from beginner to upper intermediate, and from ages 6 to... well, older than me and I'm now 60! I have taught private flute intermittently for the past 25 years, usually traveling to students' homes. I teach classical music as a foundation, while incorporating other types of music to keep it fun and interesting for the student. Many of my students have performed in recitals which I have organized, as well as in other performances that demand hard work and personal accomplishment. I have students from many different backgrounds and ages, and watching students grow from their musical endeavors and fall in love with music is one of the greatest achievements any teacher can have. My method/my style is as mentioned above: My focus is always on the individual student, their music interests and goals AND having a BLAST! My "style" is centered around enjoyment and realistic accomplishments, so the atmosphere is REWARDING! I do begin with foundational skills, music theory that is applicable to the knowledge level of my students, and technique building. However, I want my students to start to play songs as soon as possible and we only work on songs that THEY choose - I do not force students to learn songs that I select or songs that a book tells them to.
