I've been lucky enough to perform all over the U.S. and a lot of Europe by touring with different bands in high school, college, and independent touring groups. I've been teaching private lessons off and on for about 5 years now. It's been a goal of mine to learn as many instruments as possible throughout my life and focus on the instruments I love. I have taught private flute intermittently for the past 25 years, usually traveling to students' homes. I teach classical music as a foundation, while incorporating other types of music to keep it fun and interesting for the student. Many of my students have performed in recitals which I have organized, as well as in other performances that demand hard work and personal accomplishment. I have students from many different backgrounds and ages, and watching students grow from their musical endeavors and fall in love with music is one of the greatest achievements any teacher can have. While still in high school, I discovered that I love watching others realize their own musical potential. I began with tutoring my peers and enjoyed it enough to take on students of my own. My teaching had to take a pause during my college years, but I have been looking forward to the freedom to teach again! I try to help my students feel comfortable with themselves and their abilities because it can be frustrating to not understand a concept immediately or progress as quickly as others, and I want them to enjoy the music while they're playing rather than comparing themselves to others. At the beginning of a lesson, I like to begin with something fun that the student has been working on. This could be a performance piece, some improvisational composition, or another activity related to the piano. As we go along, I like to branch into the theory behind what we are doing. Once they have a firm grasp on the basics, I like to begin students fairly quickly into learning the circle of fourths, and the scales and chords following the order of the circle of fourths. I'm a quietly passionate instructor motivated by my love of music and my students. In 2016, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a Minor in Music. As an undergrad, I often found my love of music creeping into my major coursework-- including my thesis! I've loved practicing and performing for over a decade (which is also more than half of my life!).
