I am currently a senior studying Music Education at Brigham Young University and am super excited about students and teaching music! I love volleyball, spikeball, spending time outside, frozen yogurt, paint by numbers, reading, baking, and being with family! One of my favorite feelings is the satisfaction between mentor and mentee, when theyre able to accomplish something they werent before.I love to do that through private lessons. I participated in marching and concert band all throughout high school and college, including BYUs Wind Symphony, a touring group with which I have travelled to Spain and Portugal and will perform with at WASBE in Korea this summer. I approach teaching with an empty canvas. As i ask questions and listen to responses, we begin to paint that canvas until we have the same metaphorical picture. Once this is established we can build more and more from that initial canvas. I take my time to guide my students into a hands on approach to learning. I enjoy teaching because I have a love for music. It's my hope that this love and motivation to play well will be passed on to my students. It's so rewarding to me to see my students learning and growing in their musical abilities. I offer plenty of praise and encouragement. I've had no official teaching positions yet, but I have had the opportunity to teach music in more casual contexts. Being the principal violist of the Lyceum Philharmonic for a year, I was tasked to conduct sectionals, and help the viola section become more solid. Also, I sometimes will help my younger brother with his piano practice, helping him solve musical problems, and enjoy playing more. My experience as a formal teacher began just over a year ago, when I took on a beginning student who had never played the instrument before. I have also been a tutor and mentor to my peers since my high school days when I was a section leader in our symphonic and jazz bands. and captain of the marching band. I have taught guitar, piano, and flute for 30 years. The most important part of teaching is helping students to feel proud of their accomplishments and to enjoy music. I like to show my student''s performances through texting videos to their families as well as live concerts and recitals. I enjoy performing regularly as well.
