My goal with each student is to teach the fundamentals of the violin/viola, and especially how to practice in an organized way. I follow the Suzuki method for beginner students, with some additional instruction to learn to read sheet music for those with previous music experience or older students who are ready to begin reading music. After the student has completed the first several books of the Suzuki method, I include selections from Solos for Young Violinists and other solo pieces as appropriate to reinforce certain skills. I am somewhat flexible on books and methods, but unless my students have already invested time and money in a particular published method, I start them on the Bastien series, which is not too expensive and is well designed and effective. As they progress to intermediate, they will be expected to buy some classical music, collections, and technique books. Finding recordings on music apps or youtube can help to learn the piece in a different and fun way, because its an excuse to watch youtube! Besides scales, etudes, and pieces, I want to encourage my students to come to me with any questions about the music they are playing in their school music classes, orchestras, theory questions, and help with any technical instrument issues, like tuning, fixing strings, finding a good shoulder rest, how to rosin your bow and how much to tighten it. Hello! I’m Tessa. I received my Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University in Cello Performance. I’m a cellist and music enthusiast. I have performed all across the United States including Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, and Benaroya Hall. I am a private cello instructor in the Provo/Orem, Utah area.
