Hello, my name is Gerald. I'm a professional drummer/educator originally from Norfolk, VA but I've been residing in New Orleans, LA since 2016. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in music production from Norfolk State University and my master's degree in jazz education/performance from Florida State University. I moved to New Orleans to pursue my musical career because of the history of great music in the city and by the recommendation of my FSU professor (Leon Anderson) who also was a jazz drummer in New Orleans for many years. I believe that all of us are musical, even if some have more innate talent than others. Curiosity, patience and dedication, addition to good references, are key aspects that translate into growth and achievement of goals for all of us. In class, I try to work within the dreams and motivations of each student, approaching repertoires that translate the students' interests in the best possible way. I always try to work on the theoretical/formal part in conjunction with the development, above all, of the ear and ear training. Read More

I always approach teaching music in a relaxed and fun way. With the right teacher, learning music greatly rewarding and enjoyable. My teaching style is always based around my students experience level, their goals, and learning style. I always start with activities that are within the student's abilities, and carefully progress through more challenging pieces and exercises. This way, the student will always have a challenge that is achievable, not too difficult that makes them want to quit, and not to easy that makes them bored. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important that each student progresses at his or her own place. I encourage this by setting goals and assignments for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I always have a gameplan. But it’s always based upon where we’re headed/your goals as a musician. Each lesson will usually be focused on 3 concepts- whether that be adding on/advancing something we’ve already done, or bringing in something new. One of those 3 things will almost always be a song of your choice (and if you don’t know what songs you want to work on, I’ll help you pick something). Read More

I am a classically trained singer with a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance who lives, performs, and teaches in New Orleans. I frequently perform professionally in several genres of music, including opera, jazz, musical theatre, and pop. I also have several years of experience teaching in all of these genres. I sing with the New Orleans Opera and St. Cecilia's Asylum Chorus, in addition to fronting my jazz band, the Melanie Gardner Quintet, which performs regularly on Frenchmen Street and around the city. My teaching style is firm yet easygoing and fun..I expect the student to have practiced and be ready to play their homework back to me. I use repetition quite a bit but that's the best way, I find, that someone learns. I also encourage them to investigate and practice things that have not necessarily been assigned in order to see how serious they are. In other words, when they're not practicing what I show them, I expect them to experiment and investigate the fretboard on their own and then if they do come across something cool, then we can build off that Read More
