I begin my students with the fundamentals of music and the instrument. As we expand our musical knowledge, we also broaden our understanding of technique, because I strongly believe that every musician, no matter the genre they ultimately play, needs a strong foundation of musical knowledge and technical proficiency on the instrument. All the while I take into consideration what style the student is interested in. I have been teaching for more than 25 years and I have instructed students of many different ages and ability levels. My experience with music is now at 30+ years. I have worked as a private music tutor and have played with many local bands/musicians during that time. It's important to me that my students set ambitious and realistic goals, taking care not to burn out and always to enjoy what they are doing. While playing music means something different for everybody, excellence is something that everybody is capable of. I don't believe in talent to the extent most people do. I like to begin with getting a sense of where the student is in their musical development. Then, it's all about the basics! I address breathing, body alignment, relaxation/tension, and all of the aspects of singing through exercises tailor-made to address the student's individual and immediate needs. For most of my students, I will provide specific pieces that will help in their development and keep their interest. I am currently one of very few people in the world to major in a B.F.A of Finger-style guitar.
