From the second I was handed a clarinet on my 10th birthday, I knew that I wanted to spend my life playing music. I loved it so much that I even chose to go to music school on Saturdays (!!!) every week from 7th to 12th grade. I studied at the Eastman School of Music where I earned my Bachelor degree, and at Lynn Conservatory for my Masters. I was taught primarily in the William Leavitt method, and use these resources to introduce students to the basics of sight-reading, theory, and technique. My personal preference is not to adhere too strictly to any one method however, instead focusing on the application of theory within a more active musical context. Improvisation is extremely important to developing a working understanding of music in my opinion, and much of my lessons are based in actively performing progressions with students, focusing on both comping and soloing. I subscribe to the Faber and Faber Method, Suzuki Method and Bastien Classical Series for beginning students. The repertoire is supplemented with technical and sight reading exercises. I especially subsribe to the Hanon Exercises which are a great tool for building finger strength, dexterity and technical mastery. I expect my students to have a firm understanding of a variety of scales and chords (considered to be the building blocks of music) for which I subscribe to the Guild Musicianship Book as a good starting point.
