After a year and after completing the teacher training program, I started to teach piano from my home studio.During this time, I took upon myself two more years of intense composition study and experimenting with some of the secrets of this art, which now has become one of my passion. In 2007 I enrolled in a music program at the Music Conservatory of San Francisco, where I learned and expanded my knowledge on technique, performing, and music ensembles. I have over a decade’s combined experience teaching music to K-12 and adult students of all levels, including four years of TA’ing college-level music courses. I have worked as a private flute and piano teacher, an after-school program instructor, a summer music camp teacher, and as a substitute music theory instructor at a community music school. I am a passionate, motivated, and an experienced music instructor. I have been playing guitar and other various instruments since I was 11 - I'm currently in my mid thirties. I graduated in 2014 with an Associates degree in music from Sierra Community College, where my main focus was guitar and composition. Soon after, I transferred into Sacramento State's guitar program where I gained extensive knowledge of guitar scales, chords, and applicable techniques that make every day playing more enjoyable and professional. I also discovered that I had a talent for making my students feel very relaxed during their lessons. I began to go beyond just teaching from one page to the next and started to explore the creative process of creating interesting lessons that would challenge, encourage, and engage, as my teaching style would always be adjusted and adapted to perfectly fit my students' individual learning styles. Since relocating to Northern California in 1999, I have continued to work with a diverse range of ensembles and am currently teaching at two music studios, conducting clinics at local schools, and running a number of small and large group ensembles, including woodwind quintets, sax quartets, jazz combos, and experimental music groups. When it comes to teaching, I find the most important thing is that we work towards the goal of what the student wants to learn - in the case of their preferred styles/genres of music, and the songs that they really enjoy. Every student has their own individual skill level and pace that can be developed and worked around. First, I would find out the level of skill and musical interests of the student, then I would create a lesson plan utilizing all of the tools at my disposal - both from my personal experience and from other educational sources, such as: Blues books, Rock books, Classical guitar/piano books, theory books, and tablature books, or music from popular bands. I tailor my lessons to the student and their goals. I pull my methods and practices from experience and A Spectrum of Voices by Elizabeth Blades-Zeller. I also like to teach my students basic music theory to give them a better understanding of how music is structured and to deepen their overall musicianship. For that, I pull from Music in Theory and Practice Volume 1 by Bruce Benward and Marilyn Saker. Read More
